ASSEMBLY OF KEY PISTOL

REMOVE ALL SPRUES AND ROUGH POLISH ALL PARTS. DRILL THE LOCKPLATE TUMBLER HOLE AND REAM 6mm - ADJUST THE TUMBLER TO A SLIDE FIT INTO THE PRE-DRILLED AND REAMED KEY BODY.

PLACE THE LOCKPLATE ONTO TUMBLER AND LINE UP WITH THE KEY BODY FLAT.
SECURE WITH CLAMPS AND DRILL THE TWO 3.3mm HOLES FOR THE CHEESEHEAD 4mm SCREWS.

REMOVE THE PLATE FROM KEY AND OPEN OUT BOTH PLATE HOLES TO 4.1mm CLEARANCE - THEN COUNTER BORE TO APPROXIMATE DEPTH OF THE TWO CHEESEHEAD SCREWS, LESS A LITTLE FOR SCREWHEAD FINISHING.

SQUARE UP THE UNDERNEATH OF THE FRIZZEN PAN COVER AND PAN MATCHING FACE. CLAMP THE FRIZZEN TO THE PAN, AND USING A CENTRE DRILL SPOT THE CENTRE OF FRIZZEN PIVOT.

FOLLOW THROUGH WITH 3.3mm DRILL INTO THE LOCKPLATE.
REMOVE FRIZZEN AND TAP LOCKPLATE 4mm AND OPEN OUT THE FRIZZEN PIVOT HOLE TO 4.1mm

CHECK THE TUMBLER SQUARE - THEN DRILL THE CENTRE OF SPINDLE WITH 2.5mm DRILL FOR
APPROXIMATELY 5mm DEPTH - TAP 3mm.

CLEAN OUT THE FLINTCOCK SQUARE AND ENSURE A CLOSE FIT TO THE TUMBLER SQUARE, AT THE SAME TIME CLEAN OUT THE TOP JAW HOLE TO 4.9mm. PUT THE FLINTCOCK INTO THE DRILL VICE WITH THE THUMB SPUR PERFECTLY VERTICAL - DRILL 3.9mm FOR A NO.10 U.N.C. TAP AND FIT THE TOP JAW, MAKING SURE THE TOP JAW FITS TIGHT UP AT THE THUMB SPUR.

DRILL THE DOG 3.1mm AND THE PLATE DOG-HOLE 2.5mm AND TAP PLATE 3mm. THE SMALL
PROTRUSION AT THE REAR OF THE LOCKPLATE PREVENTS THE DOG FROM FALLING BACKWARDS.

DRILL THE TRIGGER/SCEAR 4.1mm AND THE CORRESPONDING KEY BODY HOLE 3.3mm AND TAP 4mm. FIT TO BODY.

PUT THE FLINTCOCK ON HALF-COCK, AND PLACE A STRONG ELASTIC BAND OVER THE THUMB SPUR AND OVER THE FRONT OF THE KEY, THIS WILL KEEP THE SCEAR IN CONTACT WITH THE TUMBLER. PUT THE DOG ONTO THE PLATE AND ENSURE THE REAR FLAT OF THE FLINTCOCK MATES WITH FRONT OF THE DOG.

SPRINGS - DRILL THE FRIZZEN SPRING SECURING HOLE 2.5mm AND TAP 3mm, FOLLOW WITH PEG-HOLE AT 2.1mm. ALSO THE MAINSPRING SECURING HOLE AT 3.3mm AND TAP 4mm, THE CORRESPONDING PEG-HOLE IS 2.4mm. THE SCEAR SPRING REQUIRES 2.5 FOR 3mm TAP, AND THE PEG-HOLE 1.5mm. OPEN THE MAINSPRING BOTTOM LEAF UNTIL IT IS APPROXIMATELY 3mm BELOW THE BOTTOM OF THE KEY BODY FLAT SECTION - SEE FIG.2. THE FRIZZEN SPRING SHOULD BE CURVED UP ON THE BOTTOM LEAF TO GIVE GOOD PRESSURE ON THE FRIZZEN PIVOT.
TREAT THE SCEAR SPRING LIKEWISE.
· SPRINGS SHOULD BE HEATED TO DULL RED 800cent. (1472f.) BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY ADJUSTMENTS, WHEN SATISFIED ALL IS CORRECT TAKE THE SPRINGS TO A BRIGHT CHERRY 1000c. (1832f.)- ALLOW TO SOAK FOR HALF A MINUTE BEFORE QUENCHING TEMPER AT 420cent. (788f.) FOR 30 MINUTES AND ALLOW TO COOL. AFTER FITTING THEY SHOULD BE TENSIONED IN STAGES i.e. PULL THE FLINTCOCK BACK SLIGHTLY AND ALLOW TO RETURN, CONTINUE PROGRESSIVELY UNTIL FULL-COCK POSITION IS REACHED. REPEAT WITH FRIZZEN AND SCEAR SPRINGS. IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT ALL SPRINGS ARE POLISHED WHERE THEY CONTACT OTHER PARTS.

SCREWHEADS SHOULD NOW BE SMOOTHED AND POLISHED ALONG WITH THE CASTINGS. THE FRIZZEN FACE AND PIVOT IS NOW HARDENED USING HARDENING POWDER APPLIED TO A BRIGHT CHERRY RED FRIZZEN, SOAKING FOR A FEW MINUTES AND QUENCHING IN COLD WATER

TREAT THE TUMBLER SQUARE AND TUMBLER BY THE ABOVE METHOD, AND POLISH THE INSIDE OF THE TUMBLER WHERE IT CONTACTS THE MAINSPRING WHICH SHOULD ALSO BE POLISHED AT THE TUMBLER
CONTACT POINT. THE FRIZZEN AND FRIZZEN SPRING MUST ALSO HAVE THE SAME TREATMENT.

NOTE; BRIDLELESS FRIZZENS ALWAYS HAVE A TENDENCY TO GAPE IN THE CLOSED POSITION
THIS IS CAUSED BY THE SPRING PRESSURE MOVING THE FRIZZEN UPWARDS ON AN
UNDERSIZE SCREW SHANK, POORLY FITTING UNDERSIZE SCREW THREAD OR MOST
OFTEN BOTH.
THE FRIZZEN SHOULD BE DRILLED AND REAMED TO 4mm TO FIT THE SUPPLIED SCREW WHICH SHOULD PROVIDE A RUNNING FIT.
